NEW LONDON, Conn. - The men's soccer teams from Lesley University and Mitchell College combined for seven goals on Saturday afternoon in an action packed New England Collegiate Conference match up. Despite a two goal rally in the second half from the Lynx, the Mariners were able to hold on for a 4-3 victory.
Lesley junior striker Phil Lund (Mililani, Hawaii) grabbed a rebound off the Mitchell goalie to score the first goal of the match just three minutes in. For Lund, it was his first goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, the Mariners got on the scoreboard as Josh Griffo (Killingworth, Conn.) crossed the ball to Adam Deltgen (Norwich, Conn.) who headed the ball to Teddy Dixon (Stratford, Conn.). Dixon finished off the nifty passing to tie the game at 1-1.
Later in the first half, Mariners midfielder Tom Derosier grabbed a loose ball from Lynx keeper Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) and found the back of the net to give Mitchell a 2-1 advantage. Three minutes later, Justin Curtis (Fairfield, Conn.) crossed the ball to Jamie Serrano (Clinton, Conn.) who fired a shot to the top shelf past Almeida-Beers.
The Mariners continued their offensive success early in the second half as James Gleason (Woodstock, Conn.) scored the goal that would give the home team a 4-1 lead.
Lesley began their second half comeback attempt in the 57th minute when freshman Alex Carros (Hackettstown, N.J.) grabbed a rebound off the keeper to give the Lynx their second goal of the match. Seven minutes later, junior Scott Wheeler (East Hampton, Conn.) off a free kick found Dallas Eubanks (St. Petersburg, Fla.) who headed the ball to get Lesley within a goal.
The Lynx were unable to score the game-tying goal for the remainder of the match and lost their second straight NECC contest following a 2-0 start to conference play. The men's soccer team is now 4-10-1 (2-2-0 NECC) and will next face Curry College on October 13 at 8 pm at home.
