Emerson retains Charles River Cup with 1-0 victory

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In a rematch with Emerson College for the Charles River Cup, the Lesley University men's soccer team fell 1-0 and dropped their record to 4-9-1 (2-1-0 NECC).  With the victory, Emerson improves their 2008 mark to 5-7-1 (0-4-0 GNAC).

It was a back and forth battle between the two teams until the 52nd minute when Lions sophomore midfielder Mike Giles (Wakefield, R.I.) was able to break the scoreless match.  Giles fought his way through the Lesley backfield to face Lynx keeper Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) one-on-one.  Almeida-Beers slid low to halt the attack but the ball was deflected behind him and Giles raced ahead to find an open net.

The match remained fast-paced and aggressive with several opportunities for both sides to score but the Emerson defense would remain strong to hold on for the win.

Emerson keeper Nick Strauss (Norwood, Mass.) faced pressure much of the game but only had to make saves on three shots on goal.  In the loss, Almeida-Beers collected four saves for the Lynx.

The Lions retain the Charles River Cup after a 2007 inaugural 2-0 victory over the Lynx at Rotch Playground.

Lesley will be back in action on Saturday, October 11 against NECC foe Mitchell College at 1:00 pm.  Emerson will travel to GNAC opponent Emmanuel College on the same day with their match starting at 7:00 pm.
