Late goals put Lynx away 2-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Lynx men's soccer team had several shot attempts that were nearly goals, but they all came up empty in their 2-0 defeat to Newbury College.

Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.), Philip Lund (Mililani, Hawaii), and Scott Wheeler (East Hampton, Conn.) each had shots that sailed just over the net in the fiercely competitive game.  Both teams had good offensive penetration, but goal keepers Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) for Lesley and Brian Picanco for Newbury made tremendous saves to keep their respective teams in the game.

It wasn't until the 85th minute when Newbury defensive back William Maddock got a breakaway when midfielder Wayne Borden found Maddock open in the middle of the field and chipped the ball past Almeida-Beers for the game's first goal.  Junior striker John Mawson followed up 3 minutes later with another breakaway goal on the assist from Chad D'Ancona to put the game away for Newbury.

"We had some good opportunities to score today but we got unlucky," said head coach Paul Vasconcelos.  "Next time, we'll turn those missed opportunities into goals and we'll get back to winning."

The loss gives Lesley an overall record of 4-6-1 (2-3 NAC).  Their next opponent will be Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday October 10.
