ENC Blanks Baseball On Way to Doubleheader Sweep

QUINCY, Mass.- Lesley University saw their three-game winning streak come to an end as Eastern Nazarene College took both ends of a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon at Bradley Field. The Lions earned a 7-4 win in the opener before senior Brandon Wells (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.) tossed a complete game, one-hit shutout to secure the 6-0 for the hosts in game two.

Lesley falls to 11-21 on the year with and will look to get back on the winning track as they play a twin-bill with the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Saturday on Deering Oaks Park in Portland. Eastern Nazarene wraps up the 2015 campaign with a 15-22 overall record.

Game One: Lesley 4, ENC 7

Eastern Nazarene pushed across one run in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 1-0 edge. Pat Yee (Lynnfield, Mass.) raked a two-out single to right to drive in Jeremy Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) from second base.

Lesley responded with a score in the top of the second to level the game at 1-1. Senior Kevin Hopwood (Winter Haven, Fla.) crossed the dish as classmate Robert Parson (Commack, N.Y.) reached on an infield single.

The hosts plated two runs in the third to claim a 3-1 advantage. Jose Arebalo (Brentwood, Calif.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to score Wagner from third before Gonzalez drove in Cameron Fiorentino (Uxbridge, Mass.) with an RBI single.

The guests cut the deficit in half with a run in the fourth, 3-2. Senior Joe Muratore (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) singled to centerfield to plate junior Casey Blanchard (Bernardston, Mass.) from second.

The Lions extended their lead to 5-2 with a pair of scores in the bottom of the frame. Wagner and Rocco Martinelli (Panama City, Panama)  each rounded the bases and scored on a single into left field off the bat of Yee.

The Lynx scored once in the fifth to pull to within two runs, 5-3, as senior David Hersey (Wolfeboro, Mass.) drove in junior Gustavo Polidor (Caracas, Venezuela) with a base knock to left-center.

Lesley trimmed the margin to 5-4 in the top of the sixth, knocking in one run. Polidor rolled a single up the middle to score Hopwood from second base.

Eastern Nazarene bounced back with two tallies in the home half of the inning to claim a 7-4 lead. Nate Crawford (Houston, Texas) and Martinelli both crossed the plate on errors.

Fiorentino pitched five innings and struck out three batters. Frank Fusco (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) hurled two innings of relief and fanned two hitters en route to earning his first save of the season.

Game two: Lesley 0, ENC 6

Wells dominated in the nightcap as he racked up seven strikeouts and allowed just one walk and one base hit to propel Eastern Nazarene to a 6-0 victory.

The senior right-hander walked the first batter of the game but bounced back to retire the next 15 hitters in a row. Wells carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning before surrendering a base knock with one out in the sixth.

The Lions erupted for three runs in the home half of the first inning to seize a 3-0 lead. Jake Koch (Dayton, Nev.) singled through the left side of the infield to drive in Jeremy Wagner to open the scoring. Wynne followed with a two-run single to left to plate Martinelli and Yee.

The hosts tacked on a pair of scores in the third to widen the gap to 5-0. Wynne crossed the plate as Justin Wagner (Oklahoma City, Okla.) reached on an error after dragging a sacrifice bunt down the third-base line. Jeremy Wagner hoisted a sacrifice fly to center to allow Miguel Ortiz (New Britain, Conn.) to tag up and scamper home.

Eastern Nazarene knocked in a run in the fifth to push its lead to 6-0. With the bases loaded, Martinelli absorbed his fourth hit-by-pitch in the game and fifth on the day as Fiorentino jogged home from third base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, senior Brady Smith (Brewer, Maine) picked up his first career hit as he laced a two-strike offering into right-centerfield.
