Renowned tennis expert Eng named Lynx head coach

Doug Eng, EdD, PhD, was named Lesley University head men's and women's tennis coach, director of athletics Jen Benway announced Wednesday.

"I'm excited to have Doug join our coaching staff for both the women's and men's tennis programs," Benway said. "Doug has a wealth of knowledge and credibility in the tennis community.  He is a fantastic teacher of the game, and I'm confident he will help guide both of our tennis programs to the next level."

Eng brings with him 16 years of experience coaching college tennis, mostly at nearby Tufts University, where he led the men's program for five seasons until 2010.

"I am delighted to have the opportunity to coach the tennis teams," said Eng. "I look forward to working with the players and helping them to achieve excellence in tennis and academics."

Eng was named "Best of Boston's" Best Tennis Coach in 2010 by Boston Magazine and has won four divisional Pro of the Year honors from the PTR and USPTA, including both in 2008. He is presently Regional Vice President of the USPTA New England and has been President of PTR New England. He is presently Co-Chair of the National Education Committee for the USPTA and is on the Unites States Tennis Association (USTA) National Sport Science Committee. He has spent many years volunteering for USTA and local grassroots community tennis.

He has worked with a number of ranked players, including sectionally and nationally ranked juniors, ITF, WTA and Davis Cup players. He is one of 10 people worldwide designated a Master Professional by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR) and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).

Eng has completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Program and has written over 70 tennis articles, including those for tennisplayer.net and tennisone.com, mostly on analysis of techniques and tactics. He has expertise in technique, tennis training and sport psychology. Eng also has expertise in coaching theory having trained or certified over 1,000 coaches for PTR and USTA.

"I look forward to a great year with the team in competing to the best of their ability in the New England Collegiate Conference," Eng said. "I think we need to train hard, recruit strong players and have a strong vision for the team."

He takes over for Marty Morrissey, who coached both the men's and women's Lynx the last three seasons.

Lesley opens 2012 on Thursday, September 6 against WIT at Harvard University, with the Lynx home opener coming Wednesday, September 12 in non-conference play against Mount Ida.
