NEW ENGLAND COLLEGIATE CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

VOLLEYBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK — Newbury College senior libero Amy Chen (Chelmsford, Mass.) led her team to a 2-0 opening week. Newbury defeated Anna Maria and Albertus Magnus both 3-1. Chen averaged five kills per set with 40 total for the week.  She tallied four kills (0.5 kills per set) and two service aces (0.25 aces per set).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK — Bay Path College freshman right-side hitter Kate Bartels (Dalton, Mass.) helped the Wildcats to a season opener victory defeating Curry 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-21). She hit .333 for the match. Bartels had three kills (1.00 kills per set), four digs (1.25 digs per set), four service aces (1.25 aces per set) and three assists (1.0 assists per set.).

FIELD HOCKEY

PLAYER OF THE WEEK — Bay Path College senior midfielder Sarah Gates (Crown Point, Ind.) notched the Wildcats only goal in the season opener.  Gates broke up the Anna Maria shut-out falling 7-1 to the AMCATS.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK —Fellow Bay Path Wildcat defender Anna Bankowski (Granville, N.Y.) tallied her first collegiate defensive save in their opening game. Bay Path faced 25 shots with eleven keeper saves and two defensive saves for their tough loss against Anna Maria 7-1.

MEN’S SOCCER

PLAYER OF THE WEEK — Lesley University senior goalkeeper Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.) was the key factor in the Lynx 3-0 opening week. Almeida-Beers posted a perfect 0.00 goals against average for his 270 minutes between the pipes. He faced 27 shots while recording 14 saves. He earned three shut-outs for a 3-0 victory over Eastern Nazarene, 1-0 win over Benedictine and a 4-0 sweep of Mount Ida for the week.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK —Lesley University freshman forward Ali Sozeri (Istanbul, Turkey) registered four goals in a 3-0 opening week for the Lynx.  Sozeri notched his first collegiate goal in a 3-0 victory of Eastern Nazarene.  He tallied eight points for the week including two game winners and two first goals scored for their three victory shut-outs.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

PLAYER OF THE WEEK —Elms College junior goalkeeper Kelly Callahan (Monson, Mass.) posted a 2.74 goals against average in two tough losses against WNEC 4-0 and Clark 2-1 in double overtime. She faced 65 shots, 37 of which were on goal, for her 197 minutes between the pipes. She had an amazing 31 saves for the week.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK — Mitchell College freshman forward Caley McClendon (Keene, N.H.) registered her first collegiate hat-trick netting all three goals in a 3-0 victory of Anna Maria. McClendon recorded all three goals in the first 26 minutes of play, while tallying her first at just 2:57 on the clock.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Becker College senior Danielle Stryker (Ledyard, Conn.) was undefeated on the week in #3 singles action while going 1-1 in #1 doubles. Becker went 2-1 in their opening week defeating Regis 9-0 and Mount Ida 7-2, while falling 7-2 to Clark.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – None

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Newbury College sophomore Jarryl Mckey (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was awarded the first NECC Runner of the Week honors for 2010.  McKey crossed the line in 40th place with a 6K time of 27:55. This was Mckey’s first cross country race.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Newbury College freshman John Morgan (Cumberland, R.I.) garners the first NECC rookie honors for the year. He clocked a 24:00 time over a 6K course at the UMaine Farmington Invitational to a 14th place finish. Morgan was the first Nighthawk harrier to cross the finish line.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

RUNNER OF THE WEEK – Newbury College junior Kayla Grady (Barrington, R.I.) finished 62nd at the UMaine Farmington Invitational. Her 5K time of 25:54 helped the Nighthawks to a 6th place team finish in her first ever collegiate race.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Fellow Newbury Nighthawk freshman Jennifer Lewis (Stratford, Conn.) finished 47th at the UMaine Farmington Invitational. In her first collegiate race Lewis clocked a 21:28 time for the 5K helping the Nighthawks to a 6th place team finish.
