Tennis and XC grab NECC honors

WOMEN'S SOCCER

PLAYER OF THE WEEK -Mitchell College sophomore forward Nikki Hoxie (Winsted, Conn.) led the Mariners to their second NECC victory netting the game winner just 33 seconds into overtime, defeating Wheelock 3-2. Prior to the game winner, Hoxie assisted in the game-tying goal in the 71st minute. For the week, she tallied three points.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Elms College freshman goalkeeper Molly Corse (Bernardston, Mass.) notched two shutouts for the week, helping the Blazers to a 1-1-0 week. Corse went 200:00 minutes of play with eight saves, while facing 21 shots. The Blazers tied 0-0 in double overtime action against St. Joseph, while defeating NECC rival Bay Path 3-0.

MEN'S SOCCER

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Mitchell College junior forward Jamie Serrano (Clinton, Conn.) led his team to a 2-0 undefeated week. Serrano scored the game winner in a 2-0 shutout of Emmanuel, while doubling his efforts and netting both goals in a 2-0 victory over NECC opponent Elms College. For the week, he tallied six points and two game winners.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK- Fellow Mitchell College freshman defender Matt Grandy (Meriden, Conn.) led the back field efforts for the Mariners' during their 2-0 shutout week. Grandy helped his team to a 2-0 victory over Emmanuel and a 2-0 conference win over Elms. The Mariner defense allowed only 13 shots on goal for the week.

FIELD HOCKEY

PLAYER OF THE WEEK -Elms College freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Bonavita (Agawam, Mass.) collected 31 saves for her 210:00 minutes of play for the week. Bonavita allowed 10 goals in a 1-2 week while facing 73 shots and 46 shots on goal.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK -Becker College freshman forward Brooke Cote (Fitchburg, Mass.) led the Hawks to a 3-0 week. Cote tallied two goals and one assist for five points, including netting the game winner in a 7-1 victory over NECC rival Daniel Webster. Becker also defeated Lasell 2-1 and Simmons 3-1 early in the week.

VOLLEYBALL

PLAYER OF THE WEEK -Daniel Webster College senior middle blocker Kristina Rieger (Concord, N.H.) swung her way to a 3-1 week for the Eagles tallying a .244 hitting percentage. Rieger notched 31 kills (2.21 per set), eight service aces (.57 per set), 30 digs (2.14 per set) and four blocks (.29 per set). She helped the Mariners to shut-down two conference opponents Mitchell and Southern Vermont each 3-0.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK -For four straight weeks, Daniel Webster College freshman outside hitter Chelsey Crawford (Westfield, Mass.) received conference weekly honors with a .258 attack percentage.  Crawford helped the Mariners to shut down two conference opponents Mitchell and Southern Vermont each 3-0, in a 3-1 weekly record. For 15 sets, she notched 38 kills (2.53 per set), six aces (0.40 per set), 22 digs (1.47 per set) and 12 blocks (0.80 per set).

WOMEN'S TENNIS

PLAYER OF THE WEEK - Bay Path senior Julia Bendzin (Poetsenkill, N.Y.) led the Wildcats to a 2-0 conference sweep defeating Mitchell 8-1 and Lesley 7-2. Bendzin finished undefeated for the week, going 2-0 at #1 singles and 2-0 at #1 doubles. With teammate Kara Fox they won 8-3 and 8-4, and she defeated the Mariners' Julie Felts 6-3, 6-2 and coming back to overtake Lynx' Courtney Mullen 1-6, 6-2 (6-3 tie-breaker).

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Lesley University freshman Courtney Mullen (Springfield, Ore.) went 3-0 in #1/#2 doubles while finishing the week 2-1 in #1 singles action. The Lynx went 1-2 for the week, beating conference leader Becker 5-4 and falling 5-4 to Mitchell and 7-2 to fellow conference leader Bay Path. For a first year program, Mullen has helped Lesley to a great program start. Her one loss on the week came from Player of the Week Bendzin, in a 1-6, 6-2 (6-3 tie-breaker).

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

RUNNER OF THE WEEK - For the fourth straight week, Lesley University freshman Noa Kupfer (Woodbridge, Mass.) was awarded runner of the week honors. She finished 182nd at the All-New England Invitational. Kupfer crossed the finish line with a 20:19 time. She led her team to a 45th place finish with 1328 points running against NCAA Division I, II and III programs.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - Lesley University freshman Jess Arnold (Hilton, N.Y.) finished 267th with a 21:50 5K time at the All-New England Invitational. She helped her team to a 45th place finish with 1328 points running against NCAA Division I, II and III programs.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

RUNNER OF THE WEEK - Lesley University senior Fran Cusick (Lexington, Mass.) placed 195th in the massive All-New England Invitational held at Franklin Park. Cusick crossed through the chute with a time of 27:03. The Lynx were 44th with a 1391 team score out of NCAA Division I, II and III programs.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK - For the second straight week, Mitchell College freshman Vernon Wilson (Vernon, N.Y.) was awarded the NECC rookie honor. Wilson finished eighth with a 19:47.6 a season best time for 5K at the Mitchell College Race. Wilson helped his team to a second place finish with 30 points.

GOLF

GOLFER OF THE WEEK - Babson College junior Bryan Eger (Marion, Mass.) was named the 2009 NECC Player of the Year for his medalist honors in the 2009 NECC Men's Golf Championships this past weekend. Eger shot a 149 (+7 over par) for a 70 first round and a 79 second round score despite extremely windy conditions. Eger led the Beavers to their first-ever NECC Championship title in their first season of competition.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK -For the second straight week, Elms College freshman Dave Pianki (West Suffield, Conn.) earned rookie honors. Pianki earned medalist honors in the Mitchell Tri-Match with a one round 82, while breaking the top ten to make the 2009 NECC All-Conference team tying for 8th place with two other freshmen. Despite the three way tie for Rookie of the Year honors, Pianki was one stroke shy of the honors shooting a five on the 6th hole. He shot 79-84=163 at the 2009 NECC Men's Golf Championships.
