Women retain NECC Champions Cup; Men place third

ATTLEBORO, Mass. - The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) concluded its second season with the Daniel Webster College Eagles and the Lesley University Lynx winning the 2009-10 Men's and Women's NECC Champions Cup for their top performances in conference regular-season and tournament play.

This season a sportsmanship portion was added to the possible points allotted to the Champions Cup. Each program received one point for each sportsmanship award received.

For the second consecutive year, the Lesley University women's programs notched the highest ranking in the NECC with 21.5 (.717) out of a possible 30 points. The Lynx won four titles this past year, including the 2009 Women's Cross Country Championship, the 2009 Women's Soccer Championship, the 2009-2010 Women's Basketball Championship and just this past week the 2010 Softball Championship. Lesley also advanced to the 2009 NECC Women’s Volleyball semifinals.

The Daniel Webster women's programs finished in second place with 11 (.333) out of a possible 33 points. The Eagles won the 2009 Women's Volleyball Championship title, while they were runners-up in women’s basketball. The Eagles also made the semifinals in field hockey and softball. Elms College (3rd), Becker College and Newbury College (tied for 4th), Wheelock College (6th), Mitchell College (7th), Southern Vermont College (8th) and Bay Path College (9th) rounded out the 2009-2010 NECC Women's Champions Cup Standings.

The Daniel Webster College men's programs received the highest ranking in the NECC with 16.5 points (.550) out of a possible 30. The Eagles won the 2009 Men's Soccer Championship title as well as a share of the 2010 Baseball Championship title. They were third in the 2009 Men’s Cross-Country Championship and advanced to the quarterfinals in the 2009-10 Men’s Basketball Championship and the finals in the 2010 Men’s Volleyball Championship.

Last year’s cup winner, the Becker College men's programs finished in a close second place with 11 points (.524) out of 21.  The Hawks were runners-up in men’s basketball and golf, while making it to the semifinals in baseball. Lesley University (3rd), Mitchell College (4th), Newbury College (5th), Elms College (6th), Wheelock College (7th) and Southern Vermont College (8th) rounded out the 2009-2010 NECC Men's Champions Cup Standings.
