Lynx Moving On to Championship Thanks to Two Torres Goals

GAME OVERVIEW:

CAMBRIDGE, MA. -- The Lesley Women's soccer team defeated the Becker Hawks 2-1 on Wednesday night in an NECC semifinal match. The Lynx advance to 14-3-1 on the season and move on to the NECC Championship, while the Hawks finish their season at 12-8-2.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Alexandria Torres was the only offense the Lynx needed on the night. Torres took the first two shots of the game and connected on her second to put the Lynx up 1-0. Kerrie Larson earned the assist after her cross was headed in by Torres. It was the eighth goal of the season and first of the playoffs for Torres, while Larson collected her seventh assist.
  • Becker did not take their first shot of the night until the 25th minute. After Lesley held position for much of the first half, the Hawks turned it around and got their first chances of the game.
  • Afte Lynx goalie Brittley Gaan was called for being outside of her box, Kyra Teixeira was given a chance at a free kick. Her shot hit off the crossbar and the Lynx were able to punch it out and keep their lead.
  • Melanie Mathewson and Sophie Smurthwaite had the difficult task of containing Teixeira, the NECC Player of the Year, in the middle of the field. Mathewson and Smurthwaite were able to successfully limit Teixeira's impact, as the banger off the crossbar was her only shot on the night.
  • The Hawks found a way to even the game at one apiece in the 44th minute of the first half. Alana Garofalo converted a free kick, just putting it out of reach of Gaan's fingers.
  • The Lynx came out strong after halftime, scoring on their second shot. Torres was the goalscorer again, her ninth of the season, with Chloe Kouyoumdjian assisting. Kouyoumdjian was able to thread a pass from the right side into Torres, who shot it through a group of Hawks defenders right by Becker goalie Olivia Sherwood.
  • Torres recorded her third multi-goal game of the season for the Lynx and Kouyoumdjian's assist was her sixth of the season.
  • The Lynx fought through a physical second half, with Larson, Hope Seasholes, and Katelyn Scott putting up strong efforts to keep the Hawks from getting good opportunities.
  • Becker was only able to get one shot off in the second half and were outshot overall fourteen to five. Sherwood took the loss, saving seven of nine shots. Gaan got the win for the Lynx, saving three of four.
