Lynx Cruise to Championship Match

Lynx Cruise to Championship Match

Cambridge, Mass— Lesley Women's soccer hosted NO. 4 Becker College in the Semi Final of the NECC Conference Championship Tournament Wednesday evening at Edwards Field.  The Lynx proved their strength as the NO. 1 seed with a 4-0 win over the Hawks, securing their spot in the championship match.

The Lynx came out the shoot ready to compete and attack the Becker defense.  Lesley created dynamic scoring opportunities within the first fifteen minutes but were unable to execute.  The first came in the 6th minute when Junior Kyra Harbus (Ventura, Calif.) and Senior Karlie Rubin (San Diego, Calif) connected for a give-and-go passing sequence down the left wing.  Harbus lifted a ball into the box, just missing the head of Junior McKenna Straube (Junction City, OR).

In the 16th minute Becker goalkeeper Jordyn Martel charged out of the net to make a diving save off the foot of a racing Jordan Mitchell (Sachse, TX) to keep the score at 0-0.

Lesley struck for two goals in two minutes in the 38th mark.  Junior Kai Morehead (Oxnard, Calif.) controlled a pass to Sophomore Katelyn Scott (Glendora, Calif.) at the top of the eighteen yard box.  Scott blasted a shot to the top left corner, an untouchable shot for the goaltender.

Minutes later, Morehead capitalized on a Hawks miscue for the second goal in as many minutes.  Morehead sent a corner right to the goalie which slipped through her hands and into the back of the net.

With under a minute on the clock, Becker had an opportunity to cut the deficit in half off a corner kick.  Senior Lilly Donovan (Newburyport, MA) made a diving grab off a header for the Lynx to keep the score at 2-0 going into the half.

Lesley showed the depth in their bench in the second half and scored two more goals giving them the 4-0 victory and securing their spot in the NECC Championship game.  Just over ten minutes into the second half, Freshman Julia Cohn (Farmington, CT) set up Mitchell for the third goal.

The final goal of the match displayed excellent execution in moving the ball up the field and then finished with finesse in front of the net.  Rubin sent a through ball to Junior Samantha Bessey (Algonquin, IL) who one timed a pass to the front of the net.  Cohn hit the pass in stride and was able to touch it passed the hawks goaltender to the right corner.

The Lynx claimed their 9th consecutive NECC Championship game appearance in the win over Becker.  Lesley will host NO. 2 Elms College Saturday November 4 at 1pm for the 2017 NECC Championship Title.
