THE LEAD – The Lesley University women's basketball team wrapped up its weekend in New York with another North Atlantic Conference matchup but fell to first place SUNY Cobleskill, 79-49, Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Fighting Tigers offense started off fast and never looked back as the hosts opened up on an 11-0 run before Leila Chisholm (Santa Barbara, Calif.) broke up the momentum with a three. However, SUNY Cobleskill continued with the offensive barrage and went back up 11 (16-5) after Logan Thayne knocked down two free throws with 4:36 left in the quarter.
- Lesley was able to pull back within nine (16-7) after Savannah Gravitt (Richmond Hill, Ga.) made a driving layup, but from then on, the Fighting Tigers closed out the quarter on a 14-3 run for a 22-point lead (32-10) after one.
- As the second quarter was underway, it was more of the same as SUNY Cobleskill pushed its advantage to 23 (41-18) after an Antonia May layup led to a Fighting Tigers timeout. Coming out of the break, SUNY Cobleskill continued to press on the offensive end and took a 53-24 lead into halftime.
- With the third quarter underway, the Fighting Tigers grabbed their largest lead of the day (68-33) courtesy of a Sierra Goodson three, causing the Lynx to call a timeout. After the timeout, Ahidali DeHuelbes (Tucson, Ariz.) hit two free throws late in the quarter with two minutes remaining (68-35) and only allowed the hosts to score once before the third came to a close.
- In the final frame, Lesley outscored SUNY Cobleskill 15-12, highlighted by five points from Jaira Moore (Chula Vista, Calif.). Despite the Lynx winning the fourth, the Fighting Tigers would ultimately win 79-49.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Moore led the Lynx in scoring on Saturday with 13 points. She has finished with 10 or more points in three games this year.
- Lesley's other double-figure scorer was Bella Terry (El Cajon, Calif.), who finished with 12 points and also brought down a team-high 10 rebounds. Her double-double Saturday marked the seventh of the year. She is currently tied for second in the nation in double-doubles.
- For SUNY Cobleskill, Logan Thayne led all scorers with 19 points and grabbed a game-high 19 rebounds. Her double-double is the 10th of the season, which is also a conference and nation best.
- Annie Canales and May were the Fighting Tigers' two other scorers in double-figures with 14 and 10 points, respectively.
- SUNY Cobleskill held the advantage in both shooting percentage and three-point shooting percentage. The Fighting Tigers shot 37.2 percent (29-78) from the field and 40.7 (11-27) beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Lesley shot 27.9 percent (17-61) from the floor and 22.7 percent (5-22) from three.
