Lesley Falls in Doubleheader at Newbury

BROOKLINE, MA- Lesley University men's volleyball was defeated in both matches of their conference doubleheader against Newbury College on Tuesday, March 9 at Pappas Gymnasium on the campus of Hellenic College. Newbury claimed the first game with sets of 25-10, 25-10 and 25-11. The home team continued the success in the following game in which they won 25-17, 25-17, 25-11. Newbury improve to 6-10 overall and 5-1 in conference, meanwhile the Lynx fall to 0-3, 0-3 in conference, overall.

GAME 1- INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Nighthawks started off fast gathering an 8-0 advantage, with four different student-athletes registering kills. The Lynx responded with a kill from Alexander Genova to chip away at the lead.
  • Newbury would expand its lead going back and forth with the Lynx, until the home team strung together a large run. Newbury closed the set on six straight points to take the first set.
  • John Gersbeck started the second set from the service line but couldn't get going after a Lesley error. From then, Newbury went on a 10-2 streak to break open the set.
  • A kill from Gersbeck sparked a short run by the Lynx, but the Lynx trailed big. The Lynx could not catchup to the large lead and would drop the second set.
  • An early start helped Newbury again as they raced out to a quick 7-2 lead. Lesley would keep the lead to just have five only being down 10-5 after a Jeremias Soto service error.
  • Newbury would eventually close the final set with multiple three and four point stretches to push themselves past Lesley.
  • Genova registered season high six kills during the contest, along with six digs and two assists. Andrew Medeiros paced the Lesley defense with eight digs.
  • Juan De Jesus posted 11 kills, with a kill percentage of .714. Soto led all student-athletes with 25 assists.

GAME 2- INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

  • Early in the first set, Lesley stormed out to a 7-4 lead after seven errors from the Nighthawks. From that point, Newbury went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the set.
  • Newbury maintained the lead until the end as a 5-1 final streak was enough to win the first set.
  • Lesley was able to use early Newbury mistakes to hold an early lead in the second set. Both teams would exchange points until all things were square at 10 points apiece.
  • The Nighthawks used a stretch of three service aces, two kills, and one Lesley error to take a lead that they would not lose. Lesley pecked away at the deficit but could not overcome it.
  • Newbury would not lose focus, as the Nighthawks quickly picked up a six point lead ahead 9-3. A Genova kill followed but would only lead to another spurt of points for Newbury.
  • Lesley could not handle the Nighthawks as Newbury tagged on another six point run and eventually win the final set, 25-11.
  • Lesley's offense was led by Genova with five kills, Genova also lead the way in assists with four. Medeiros hit double-digits in digs with 10.
  • Rory Dobbins and De Jesus provided the offense for Newbury, with 12 and eight kills respectively. Soto led all student-athletes in assists with 17.

Lesley (0-3, 0-3) host a tri-match Saturday, March 9th, welcoming Eastern Nazarene College and Elms College, the first match is set to begin at 1:30PM. Newbury (6-10, 5-1) have a tri-match of its own Saturday, March 9th, as Nichols College and Endicott College travel to Brookline, the first match will commence at 11:00 AM.
