GAME OVERVIEW:
Brookline, MA: Lesley came up short against Newbury College in a conference double-header on Friday, April 6. The Lynx were defeated in both games 3-0. Newbury claimed the opener with sets of 25-6, 25-14 and 25-11. The second game was much closer but still Newbury came on top by 25-14, 25-14, 25-15. The second contest was a home fixture for Lesley despite the game not being played at Nicholas Athletic Center in Cambridge.
GAME 1-INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- Newbury surged into a sizeable lead in the early stages of the opening set with a seven point streak. The run included a kill for Trevor Thorne and a Jeremias Soto service ace.
- Lesley cut the home team's run with two points in a row, both of which were Newbury attack errors from Thorne and Alvin Fernandes.
- The Lynx could only muster four more scores in the first set with the away side's points consisting of three service errors and one attack error.
- Jim Ray's team took the lead for the first time early on in the second set when Steven Newman scored with a service ace to make it 4-3. Lesley newcomer Andrew Mederios had scored with a kill prior to Newman's ace.
- Mederios followed up with another kill just before William Sgro scored with a service ace to make it 6-5 to Lesley.
- The Nighthawks responded with five unanswered points to go 13-7 in front. Lesley managed to get back to within four points of Newbury in the second set but were unable to cut the gap any closer. Lesley added two further kills in the second set from juniors Steven Newman and Karuna Chiemruom.
- Newbury's Jeremias Soto was on service for his side's seven point run at the beginning of the third set until he committed a service error to gift Lesley their first score.
- Lesley's biggest streak of the set was three points and included a kill for freshman William Sgro who was assisted by Karuna Chiemruom. Chiemruom also assisted John Gersbeck for Lesley's only other kill of the set, which they lost in the end by 13 points.
GAME 2- INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:
- The Lynx made a superb start to the second match as they went 4-1 ahead. Karuna Chiemruom scored a service ace during this period.
- The Nighthawks overturned the deficit with a six point streak to take command of the game. Newbury never trailed again in the opening set. The nearest Lesley got to within their opponents in the remainder of the set was two points.
- One positive that Lesley could take from the second set was the fact they recorded five kills from freshman Armando Bahena (two), Alexander Genova, Steven Newman and John Gersbeck.
- At the start of the second set, Lesley responded to conceding the first six points with a half dozen scores of their own in a row. The Lynx's six point streak included kills for William Sgro and Alexander Genova, who was assisted by Sgro.
- There were a number of other streaks in the second set. Newbury went 2-0 up in the game with five, four and seven point runs. Lesley enjoyed a four point run at the end of the set that included a service ace for Steven Newman, but Newbury held onto the 25-14 set win.
- Lesley was right in contention in the third set when after 13 scores, they trailed just 7-6. Amongst Lesley's six early scores were kills for Alexander Genova and John Gersbeck.
- Newbury added the next five scores of the set to go six points clear. Lesley battled valiantly but could only reduce the deficit to four points in the remainder of the third set as the Nighthawks took the final set 25-15 and claimed the the second game of the day between the teams.
- John Gersbeck added three more kills in the final set while Steven Newman scored with a pair of kills and Alexander Genova added one to his personal tally.
